About Hoof & Hope Healing

Nestled in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, Hoof & Hope Healing is more than a counseling practice-it's a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and begin again.

We specialize in equine-assisted psychotherapy for individuals who feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or weighed down by experiences they haven't fully processed. Many of our clients are adults and young adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, or relationship struggles. We also serve veterans, active military, and first responders who are carrying the quiet weight of service and are looking for a steady, grounded path toward healing.

Our work is experiential, relational, and deeply respectful. We don't rush the process. We don't force breakthroughs. We create space-so you can reconnect with your own strength.

What Is Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy?

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a structured, evidence-informed therapeutic approach that integrates licensed mental health counseling with intentional interaction with horses.

Unlike recreational riding programs, our work takes place on the ground. You'll engage in activities such as leading, observing, and working alongside a horse while guided by a licensed therapist and equine specialist. Horses are highly attuned to human emotion and body language. They respond honestly and immediately, offering powerful, nonverbal feedback that can illuminate patterns in communication, trust, boundaries, and emotional regulation.

EAP can be especially effective for individuals working through:

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress
  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Depression and emotional numbness
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship challenges
  • Life transitions
  • Service-related stress for veterans and first responders

For many clients-especially those who struggle to "talk about it"-this experiential approach feels more natural and less intimidating than traditional office-based therapy alone.

What You Can Expect

If you're considering equine-assisted therapy, you might be wondering what a session actually looks like.

Here's what you can expect:

A Calm, Structured Environment

Sessions take place outdoors or in a safe arena setting. You'll be guided step-by-step-no prior horse experience is required.

Ground-Based Activities

You'll interact with the horse through grooming, leading, boundary-setting, and reflective exercises. These activities are intentionally designed to mirror real-life patterns in communication and emotional response.

Guided Reflection

Your therapist will help you explore what's happening in the moment-both internally and relationally. The goal is not performance, but awareness.

A Personalized Approach

Every session is tailored to you. Whether you are navigating trauma, burnout, or simply feeling disconnected from yourself, the process unfolds at your pace.

Many veterans and first responders appreciate that this work feels practical and grounded. There's movement. There's space. There's purpose. You don't have to sit face-to-face and search for the right words before you're ready.

The Therapeutic Ability of Horses

Horses are uniquely suited for therapeutic work because they are prey animals with exceptional awareness. Their survival depends on reading subtle cues in their environment-including human emotional states.

This creates powerful opportunities for growth.

Non-Judgmental Reflection

A horse doesn't care about your title, your past mistakes, or how composed you appear. They respond only to what is true in the moment. That honesty can be both humbling and freeing.

Emotional Regulation

Horses naturally seek calm, regulated leadership. As you learn to regulate your breathing, posture, and emotional state, the horse often responds in kind-offering immediate, tangible feedback.

Building Trust and Boundaries

Working with a thousand-pound animal requires clarity and confidence. Clients often discover that the skills needed with a horse-clear communication, healthy boundaries, grounded presence-are the same skills that strengthen relationships at home and work.

Embodied, Physical Experience

Healing is not only cognitive-it's physical. Movement, outdoor air, and sensory engagement help integrate insights in ways that traditional talk therapy alone sometimes cannot.

Healing doesn't have to feel clinical.
It can feel grounded. Steady. Honest.

And sometimes, it begins with a horse.
